Humans of Khmer America

Korlany Chhun, Doctoral Student

My name is Korlany Chhun and I am 28-years-old, originally from Sacramento, CA. I am a first-generation Cambodian refugee, and immigrated to the U.S. with my parents at the age of two. I recently graduated with my doctorate in the field of marriage and family therapy and my dissertation was titled, “Transgenerational Trauma Amongst Second-Generation Cambodian-Americans.” This research has meant a lot to me and I am so grateful and honored to have had the experience of interviewing other second-generation Cambodians and listening to their stories. The doctoral journey was quite a long and emotional process, but I am so proud to have accomplished this milestone! I am currently working in private practice and at a psychiatric hospital, writing a proposal for a book on transgenerational trauma and parenting, and planning my wedding for next year. I hope that in sharing my story I can help motivate and encourage everyone, regardless of background, to shoot for the stars and follow the path of your dreams. Sometimes you never know where it may take you, and that it can lead to great things.
