Humans of Khmer America

Savannah and Catalina Sa-Ngoun

“My best friend Savannah and I are traveling to Siem Reap in August to volunteer at the Cambodian Women in Crisis Center. The urgency for our trip is that women and children are a voiceless minority in Cambodia. It’s very easy, where men are in power, to not be able to fight for yourself or have many resources of support. So for women in Cambodia specifically, where it’s male dominated, we want raise awareness that they have a place that they can go to, rather than looking at another country to run to. Our goal for this trip is to raise awareness that women and children have these resources in their own country and help in any way possible to show them the light at the end of the tunnel. I graduated with a degree in Global Health and Savannah in Social Work, so it’s very aligned with what we’ve been working towards academically. Just in general, our goal is to show Khmer women that it’s possible to have the resources at home and it’s not as out of reach as it can seem.”
