Humans of Khmer America

Words by Sothary Chea

My mother is an extremely strong will woman. During the Khmer Rouge at 2 months old, she was given away by her biological parents to my grandparents. Despite her young age, the chain of events during those years of escaping, dodging bullets and carefully maneuvering through land mines, has remain etched in her memory. Settled in Stockton, California, she went through grade school challenged by the assimilation of the new culture. Nevertheless, she graduated high school. She became a young mother. She strive to be a successful working professional–through real estate and being an entrepreneur. “There is nothing you can’t do,” said my mother. Those words give me the strength to live and strive for a better future. Happy Mother’s Day! I love you.
