Humans of Khmer America

Words by Diana Ung

My mom. Brave, strong, determined and persistent. Her and my sister ended up getting separated by the Khmer Rouge. They were forced to work in separate fields. My sister was only 7-years-old at the time. My mom was determined to save my sister. The first couple times my mother snuck out in such attempt, she was brought back by the soldiers and was beaten. But that didn’t stop my mom. She didnt quit. She eventually ended up saving my sister and they fled to Thailand. And that is how I got here to America. My mom is a hero. Happy Mother’s Day Mom. I wish I can be with you. Love you mom.
